The Emperor's Family Drawing Room
Palace of Versailles · Paris, France
Furnished with several small tables and facing chairs, this room was once something like a board-game parlor. When the Grand Trianon was first built, the room served as a performance hall, but as Louis XIV grew older and sought a quieter retreat, it was remodeled into its present form.
Louis XV later turned it into a "game room" for cards and board games, and the lilac-veined marble fireplace seen today was installed during that renovation. Games continued here into Napoleon's era, and the tables now on display were custom-ordered by him personally. Napoleon enjoyed gathering his family here in the evenings to play games, which is how the room came to be known as the Emperor's Family Drawing Room.
