The Window Telling Louis IX's Story

Sainte-Chapelle · Paris, France

This is the most unusual window in the chapel, because it tells the story not of the Bible but of Louis IX. It traces the journey that ended with the Crown of Thorns being installed in Sainte-Chapelle.

Near the bottom, the crown is shown being received, then carried on a litter to Paris and into the royal palace. Higher up, Louis orders the construction of Sainte-Chapelle to house the relics and work begins, followed by the consecration of the finished chapel, attended by the king and queen. At the very top are the relics and Louis himself.

By including Louis IX in the glass, the designers delivered a powerful visual message: the history of the Bible continues through the French royal house of the present day.
