Renoir, Gabrielle and Jean
Musée de l'Orangerie · Paris, France
The child in this painting is Jean, Renoir's second son, and the woman beside him is Gabrielle, a cousin of Renoir's wife. From the time Jean was born, Gabrielle lived with the family to help care for him and manage household tasks.
Both figures appear remarkably at ease, and the warm palette and soft brushwork carry the gentle warmth so characteristic of Renoir's work.
Renoir had long favored painting outdoors, and most of his best-known works were completed en plein air. By this period, however, he had shifted largely to working indoors as he explored a new style. He also began relying less on professional models and more on family and close acquaintances — partly a practical choice, but also because their familiarity made for far more natural, relaxed poses.
