Derain's Harlequin with Guitar
Musée de l'Orangerie · Paris, France
André Derain's Harlequin with Guitar is a monumental, life-sized work measuring 190 by 97 centimeters. The model was Salvado, a Spanish painter who worked for both Derain and Picasso; he also posed as the harlequin in the companion piece Harlequin and Pierrot, with which this painting is often displayed.
Here too, Derain sought to express the sorrow beneath the clown's public face: rather than a cheerful expression, the figure wears a blank, faintly lonely look. The painting was acquired by Paul Guillaume, who is said to have owned it alongside Harlequin and Pierrot and two clown paintings by Picasso — four works on the theme in total.
