Modigliani's The Young Apprentice
Musée de l'Orangerie · Paris, France
Modigliani's The Young Apprentice draws on Cézanne's Man with a Pipe for its composition — the figure's pose closely echoes Cézanne's — while everything else about the painting bears Modigliani's own distinctive style.
True to an artist who spent years working as a sculptor, Modigliani gives the hands resting on the knee and the shape of the eyes a carved, statue-like quality. The hands in particular appear unusually rough and heavy, a detail that traces back to the artist's time recovering his health in the south of France, where he painted the local farmers and laborers who served as his models.
