The All-Yellow Dining Room
Giverny · Paris, France
This dining room is a cheerful, head-to-toe yellow. If a restaurant looked like this today, you'd probably go just for the photos. For the early 20th century, it was remarkable: Monet was more than a hundred years ahead of his time. Dark, heavy interiors were in fashion then, but he ignored the trend and chose a bright yellow. A yellow this vivid also makes the blue on the dishes look even more intense.
The walls here carry more ukiyo-e prints, chosen with what Monet considered an expert eye. He collected mostly woodblock artists such as Hokusai, Utamaro and Hiroshige.
