The War Room

This is the Room of War.

Let's begin by looking at the ceiling.

At the center of the painting is a figure representing France.

She's wearing a cloak embroidered with lilies, the symbol of the House of Bourbon—the same emblem you saw on Louis XIV's robe in the previous room.

On her shield is a portrait of Louis XIV.

Around him, the goddesses of Victory celebrate France's military triumphs in the Netherlands, Germany, Spain, and other parts of Europe.

Now, let's take a look at the magnificent relief covering one entire wall.

At the center, Louis XIV is shown on horseback, trampling his enemies beneath his horse.

Above him, Fama, the goddess of Fame, blows her trumpet as she prepares to place a laurel wreath upon his head.

Below are two bound captives, and between them is the face of Hercules.

At the very bottom, Clio, the Muse of History, is recording Louis XIV's achievements on a shield.

Together, these sculptures celebrate Louis XIV's military achievements.

Before entering the Hall of Mirrors, the grand stage of Versailles, visiting nobles and foreign ambassadors passed through this room, where they were meant to feel both awe and the overwhelming power of the King of France.
