This is the royal chapel. Listening to the sound of the pipe organ at the front, Louis XIV attended Mass here every morning at ten o'clock. The upper level where we now stand was reserved exclusively for Louis XIV and his family — celebrating Mass closer to the ceiling fresco representing God made visible the idea that the king's authority came directly from heaven. The grand columns supporting this upper level lend the space an even greater sense of sanctity and majesty.

The lower level was reserved for ordinary nobles and courtiers, who looked up toward this gallery. Interestingly, during services they often stood facing the king above rather than the altar — to them, the Sun King standing before their eyes was a more absolute presence than an unseen God. The royals, who otherwise never mixed with those below, did descend to the lower level on one notable occasion: the wedding of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette. It's said that for major occasions such as weddings or important feast days, the royal family would come down to the lower chapel as well.

Looking up at the ceiling, the fresco represents the Holy Trinity — Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Above the organ at the front, Jesus Christ, the Son, is shown rising; at the center, God the Father, creator of all things, shines in glory. Finally, on the wall behind the viewers — out of direct sight — a single dove appears, the Christian symbol of the Holy Spirit.
