The Queen's House
Palace of Versailles · Paris, France
The upstairs balcony of the Queen's House has real charm — Marie Antoinette would often watch the farm work from here, or head left toward the billiard room. Like the mill nearby, this building has its own bit of trickery: look closely at the wall beneath the balcony, and you'll see the brickwork isn't real brick at all, but paint. Wanting the look of a centuries-old farmhouse, Marie Antoinette had artists paint on the marks of age — a kind of manufactured vintage look for the exterior. Despite that rustic facade, though, the interior was reportedly furnished with the finest furniture and porcelain.
