The Mill
Palace of Versailles · Paris, France
The waterwheel beside the house is purely decorative. The mill was never meant to grind grain into flour — its real purpose was simply to evoke the atmosphere of rural life. The Queen's Hamlet was never a village of real farmers; it was, from start to finish, Marie Antoinette's personal retreat. For commoners who couldn't even get bread to eat, a fake mill built purely to dress up the queen's private playground would have been infuriating to learn of.
