The Guardhouse
Palace of Versailles · Paris, France
The hamlet's tranquility didn't maintain itself — it depended on this very guardhouse. Though it housed soldiers, the building was dressed up as a farmhouse just like all the others nearby. The queen insisted that even the quarters of the men guarding her be styled to match the hamlet's storybook atmosphere, so as not to break the spell. Picture uniformed soldiers stepping out of this tiny country cottage, and the whole scene gets even more fairy-tale-like.
Because blocking the surrounding view with walls would have ruined the illusion of a real village, the queen also chose not to enclose the hamlet, which meant security had to be all the tighter as a result. This is the only building in the Queen's Hamlet open to visitors on the inside, so be sure to step in — it even has a bathroom.
