Brasserie Lipp: Hemingway's Alsatian Favorite
Saint-Germain-des-Prés · Paris, France
The eye-catching red restaurant across the boulevard is Brasserie Lipp, an Alsatian restaurant that Hemingway loved.
Opened in 1880, it is a historic institution famous for traditional Alsatian cooking. Signature dishes include choucroute (a pickled-cabbage dish) and cervelas rémoulade, a salad made with sausage. Hemingway often came here to write, and it was a long-standing meeting place for French writers and even politicians.
If you're curious about Alsatian food, it is worth a visit. No reservation is needed, and walk-ins are welcome. Alsatian cooking in the middle of Paris makes for a nice change.
If you aren't eating here, head back the way you came. Return toward Saint-Germain-des-Prés station, continue straight in that direction for three to four minutes, then turn into the alley on your left. The street you want is Rue de l'Échaudé; check the street sign to be sure.
