Caviar de Neuvic: French Caviar in Paris
Saint-Germain-des-Prés · Paris, France
With its clean façade and logo, Caviar de Neuvic (Comptoir Paris) is easy to spot; just check the sign. From April to September, a terrace is set up out front.
The caviar comes from the small village of Neuvic in the Dordogne, in southwestern France just below Bordeaux. Pristine surroundings and plentiful water make it well suited to sturgeon farming, and that's what allows the house to produce high-quality caviar. Here you can buy, or taste, a range of caviars produced in an eco-friendly way at the company's own farm. Tasting several varieties, however, is only possible if you've booked online or want to buy, since the prices are high. The shop also sells caviar salt, caviar butter and smoked fish, along with champagne to go with fine foods.
France has a deep food culture, so caviar consumption is relatively high. Since the 1980s, growing interest in environmental protection and sustainable production has also led the country to successfully farm sturgeon in clean-water regions and produce premium caviar. The French government and related businesses have actively backed the industry, particularly in the water-rich southwest: Dordogne, Aquitaine and Gironde. That's why France is now recognized worldwide for high-end caviar.
Our guide visited the shop in person and explained the aim of introducing French food culture, and the shop agreed to give a 30% discount to anyone who shows proof of purchase of this tour. If you plan to buy, be sure to show it. Purchases are packed with ice packs to protect quality, and they can be carried for up to 12 hours. From April to September, you can also enjoy caviar and other products on the terrace with French wine, champagne and vodka.
Next is Ambassade de Bourgogne, where you can try Burgundy wines. It's on the same street: just walk back the way you came, and you'll be there in under a minute.
