He Said He'd Fix It, and Never Did: The Dried-Up Spring
Musée Rodin · Paris, France
The Dried-Up Spring combines two casts of She Who Was the Helmet-Maker's Beautiful Wife, positioned facing one another with a veil draped overhead to suggest a cave. Rodin once explained that one of the two aged women in this "cave" was meant to be revised — meaning the piece was, by his own account, unfinished. It's another instance of his non-finito approach, and in the end, he never got around to making that revision at all.
This technique of reusing the same figure appears not only here but also in Rodin's The Three Shades, which places identical casts of the same figure side by side. You can see The Three Shades in person out in the garden of the Musée Rodin.
