Jim Morrison's Grave
Paris · Paris, France
Next, let's head to the grave of Jim Morrison, the American lead singer of the psychedelic rock band The Doors, who was born in 1943 and died in 1971. Brian Jones of the Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, the legendary rock singer Janis Joplin, Kurt Cobain of Nirvana and Amy Winehouse, loved for her one-of-a-kind voice, all died at 27, and together they are known as the "27 Club." Morrison is one of its best-known members.
Morrison defined an era with a rebellious spirit and metaphor-rich lyrics influenced by Nietzsche and Rimbaud. He died in Paris at 27. As The Doors' popularity exploded and their success grew, his own life only got more worn down. Dependent on alcohol and drugs, he eventually left the band and withdrew to Paris with his girlfriend. His death is officially attributed to a heart attack, but no autopsy was performed, so the exact cause has never been confirmed.
As soon as the grave was built, fans drawn to its free-spirited rock energy began covering it in graffiti. The tree next to it is also famous as a spot where people stick their chewed gum. Some visitors even brought beer on purpose as a tribute to Morrison, who loved a drink, drinking half a can and leaving the rest at the grave. To stop the ongoing damage, Morrison's father placed a large headstone on the grave, inscribed in Greek with a phrase meaning "true to himself." Today it rests in peace under the watch of cemetery staff, and like Oscar Wilde's tomb it is fenced off, making such behavior all but impossible.
