An Unposed Moment: Toulouse-Lautrec's Grooming
Musée d'Orsay · Paris, France
A woman sits slumped on the floor with her back turned to us. Her red hair falls loose and unbound as she quietly washes herself. There's no record confirming exactly who she was, but she was most likely one of the women Toulouse-Lautrec spent his time with in Montmartre.
Toulouse-Lautrec preferred painting figures at rest — ordinary gestures, the most unguarded movements — far more than posed models. This painting is no exception: it isn't a scene dressed up for anyone, but a moment caught exactly as it was, a woman catching her breath after a day's work. Look quietly at that still back for a moment, and it's easy to find yourself imagining the day she'd just lived through.
