A woman sits comfortably on the ground in a natural setting, a small dog resting beside her. At first glance it resembles a classical nude, but look closer and the mood is entirely different. Courbet wasn't painting a mythological goddess. Instead, he shows a real woman's body as it actually is — the weight and texture of real skin. There's no smoothing it into perfection, no idealized proportions. The dog beside her matters too; the presence of such a private, intimate animal is itself a signal that this is a scene from real life, not mythology.

Where classical nudes aimed to depict an idealized, perfect beauty, Courbet was a painter who pulled real human life and real bodies directly into the frame.
