This is Henri Matisse's Woman with a Violin, showing a seated woman with a violin resting on her lap—a work that reflects his time living and painting in Nice. The blue circular Moorish-style pattern in the background is a motif that recurs often in his work from this period.

Matisse loved music, the violin especially, and is said to have practiced it daily while he lived in Nice. That devotion also surfaces in several of his other violin-themed paintings.

The composition itself is worth a closer look. Matisse balances straight and curved lines to create a distinctive harmony: the woman's striped clothing and the table legs rely on straight lines for a sense of stability, while the rounded Moorish pattern behind her adds warmth. Straight lines alone can feel cold, and curves alone can feel weak—by blending the two, Matisse arrives at a painting that is both balanced and warm.
