Derain - Roses on a Black Ground
Musée de l'Orangerie · Paris, France
Have you ever seen a still life with a completely black background? It's an uncommon choice. Derain painted the background black to make the roses' color and light stand out all the more—had the backdrop been bright or colorful, the eye would have scattered and the flowers would have lost their focus.
The tradeoff is that other elements recede into darkness along with the background. A vase sits beneath the flowers, barely visible in the shadow, so Derain added a few dabs of white paint to it to suggest light catching its surface—just enough to make its presence clearly felt even in the dark.
Derain once said: "The things I paint only come alive once I place a white dot on them." In this painting, those white dots do more than depict light—they are Derain's own quiet trick for giving objects a sense of life and presence.
