Renoir, Woman with a Hat
Musée de l'Orangerie · Paris, France
The reddish palette of this painting signals Renoir's late style at a glance. The woman's small face contrasts with her notably fuller figure, a choice influenced by the Dutch painter Rubens, who believed voluptuous women were beautiful and painted them larger than life.
Renoir also used the glazing technique, applying thin, diluted layers of transparent or semi-transparent paint one over another. This softened the contours of the figure, letting her skin tone blend naturally into the background, while the buildup of layered paint added a sense of fullness that further enhanced her voluptuous form.
