Another work from Renoir's late period, this painting also reflects the influence of the Dutch master Rubens, who saw voluptuous women as the ideal of beauty. The figure is rendered with a fuller form, and the canvas glows with warm reddish tones throughout.
By the time he painted this, Renoir's rheumatism had grown severe enough to make painting itself difficult, yet he remained a painter who never set his brush down and kept working to the end.
