Derain - Reclining Nude
Musée de l'Orangerie · Paris, France
Most of Derain's nudes depict seated women, but he also painted reclining figures like this one. The pose looks far from comfortable: Derain always asked his models to hold positions that clearly revealed the lines of the body, and such poses are hard to sustain for long—a strain that shows faintly in the model's expression.
The background is not drawn from an actual seaside view but imagined, reduced to three simple lines dividing sky, sea, and land. The muted palette keeps the eye focused squarely on the figure rather than the setting.
Here, Derain deliberately stripped away complex backdrops and emotional expression to concentrate purely on the lines and form of the human body. Distancing himself from the Cubism and abstraction fashionable at the time, he pursued instead the kind of essential, sculptural beauty found in classical art.
