Picasso - Nude Woman Draped in Cloth
Musée de l'Orangerie · Paris, France
This painting belongs to Picasso's series of monumental female nudes, produced intensively between 1919 and 1923. As throughout the series, a single woman's figure fills the entire canvas here.
Soft grays and apricot tones dominate the color palette, while the white cloth draped over her body naturally draws the eye and heightens her presence. The strong contrast of light and shadow gives her form an almost sculptural solidity that's worth lingering on.
This mode of representation grew out of Picasso's 1917 travels through Rome and Pompeii, where he encountered ancient sculpture and Renaissance painting firsthand; some have noted a resemblance to the prophets Michelangelo painted on the Sistine Chapel ceiling. Yet Picasso never simply copied the past. Across this period, his work shows him steadily layering a style all his own on top of classical foundations.
