André Derain — Beautiful Model
Musée de l'Orangerie · Paris, France
From the 1920s onward, Derain made the seated female nude a central theme of his work. He favored the seated pose over standing or reclining ones because it let him express the body's structure more effectively. Here, too, the angle of the raised arm and the bend of the right leg are rendered with real precision—details the seated pose was particularly suited to capturing. Although already an established master by this point, Derain is said to have produced three or four studies a day while working toward this nude.
