The Pronaos: A Small Passage
Musée de l'Orangerie · Paris, France
This small passage, just before the rooms holding Monet's Water Lilies, is more than a simple corridor. Called the "pronaos" — a term originally referring to the entrance porch of an ancient Greek temple — it was deliberately designed by Monet to turn the experience of viewing the Water Lilies into something spiritual and sacred, rather than just looking at paintings.
