Rue François Miron: A Church on a Hill of Bones
Le Marais · Paris, France
You've arrived at Rue François Miron. From here, you can see once more that Saint-Gervais-Saint-Protais was built on slightly higher ground than its surroundings. In fact, there used to be a public cemetery here. Bodies are said to have piled up around it, forming mounds that gradually raised the ground. The cemetery is gone, but the church still stands on that hill of the dead, with a road running past and buildings built upon it. The long staircase you meet as soon as you leave Rue des Barres was built to connect that hill with street level on Rue François Miron.
