How to Visit Auvers-sur-Oise
Auvers-sur-Oise · Paris, France
Your visit to Auvers-sur-Oise begins at the train station. From Paris you can leave from either Gare du Nord or Gare Saint-Lazare. There is no direct train, so you will change once; allow about an hour in total, transfer included. Once you arrive at Auvers-sur-Oise station, you can start exploring the moment you step outside. Many visitors come by rental car, too: park in the lot behind the town hall and the station is less than a five-minute walk away.
Here is the suggested route. Start across from the station with the painting of Daubigny's Garden, then continue to the Daubigny statue and the Church of Auvers before reaching Van Gogh's grave. From there, follow a quiet country path through the wheat fields back toward the church and take a look inside. Wander through the charming lanes to the Daubigny Museum, then visit Van Gogh's House next door. Admire the town hall straight ahead, catch your breath at a café, and move on to the Château d'Auvers. After that, stop by the little-known House of Dr. Gachet, then head back to the station, and the main route is complete. If you have time to spare, a stroll along the banks of the Oise makes a lovely finish.
The village is small and easy to cover on foot, but there is little shade, so take care on hot days.
Some sights charge admission and some do not. Van Gogh's House, the Château d'Auvers and the Daubigny Museum are paid; the House of Dr. Gachet is free. Walking in the château's gardens is free, too.
