The Battle of Jemappes Relief
Arc de Triomphe · Paris, France
That wraps up the sculptures on the front of the Arc. On your way clockwise around to the back, you will pass another relief near the arch on the left side.
It depicts the Battle of Jemappes, fought on November 6, 1792, in what is now Belgium, between French forces and the Holy Roman Empire. It records the first victory the French revolutionary army won on the offensive. The revolutionary troops were inexperienced volunteers with little proper training, up against the Empire's trained soldiers, which makes this win all the more historically significant.
