The Family of Louis XIV
Palace of Versailles · Paris, France
Most of the portraits in this room depict Louis XIV's relatives and grandchildren. The largest painting here shows the wedding of his grandson, the Petit Dauphin Louis, to Marie-Adélaïde of Savoy. Both look quite young in the painting — and indeed they were: the Petit Dauphin was fifteen and Marie-Adélaïde just twelve at the time. The marriage was far more than a personal union; it carried political and diplomatic weight between the two states. The wedding itself was held in the Hercules Salon, and the ball that followed took place in the Hall of Mirrors.
