The Empress's Bedchamber
Palace of Versailles · Paris, France
The most striking object in the room is the ornate bed once used by Marie-Louise, Napoleon's second wife. It originally stood in Napoleon's own bedroom at the Tuileries Palace in Paris, but when Marie-Louise took a liking to it, he gave it to her. Most of the furniture in the room today was chosen by Marie-Louise herself.
The column standing in the middle of the room also has a history. In Louis XIV's time, a wall stood in its place, dividing the space into separate rooms; the wall was later removed and the rooms merged to create the open space seen today. Only the sun motif carved into the column's base remains as a trace of Louis XIV, the Sun King, who built this palace.
