At the Place d'Armes, Before the Statue of Louis XIV
Palace of Versailles · Paris, France
The equestrian statue in front of you is Louis XIV, the king who built Versailles. Behind it rises the palace itself, its vast roofline a striking mix of blue and gold that makes an overwhelming first impression. Visitors in his era would likely have felt awed by the sheer grandeur of the place even before setting eyes on the king himself. On the way to the entrance, you'll pass through a quick bag check, after which you'll see an entrance marked with a large letter "A" just ahead on the left. A sign there lists entry times — simply join the line matching your reserved time slot.
