Bronze, Yet One of Rodin's Latest: The Head of Iris
Musée Rodin · Paris, France
The Head of Iris traces its origins back to two of Rodin's major works, The Gates of Hell and the Monument to Victor Hugo. In 1910, Rodin decided to turn this head into a standalone sculpture and began the work. By enlarging the head and simplifying its form, he arrived at something where the facial features, as you can see here, are barely recognizable.
Cast in bronze, this sculpture might look quite old at first glance, but it's actually one of the most recent pieces Rodin ever completed, finished in 1911.
