A Sculpture That Never Touches the Ground
Musée Picasso Paris · Paris, France
*Petite fille sautant à la corde* (Little Girl Skipping Rope) was made while Picasso was living in Vallauris with Françoise. In an interview years later, Françoise explained that he had always dreamed of a sculpture that didn't touch the ground, and that the idea came to him as he watched a little girl leap into a rope. He then bought the iron, tubing, and cord he needed at a shop and built the piece. By 1950 Picasso was already well along in years, yet the work shows that he was still exploring new forms of art.
