From Sacré-Cœur, pass the area around Place du Tertre and walk a little further to reach the Musée de Montmartre. The museum is worth a visit in itself, but the winding lane leading to it is just as lovely, and as you walk you'll naturally pick up on the charm of Montmartre's back streets.

The museum occupies space that painters active in Montmartre, such as Renoir and Suzanne Valadon, actually used. Musicians and writers worked here too. On display are paintings, prints, and documents that show Montmartre as it once was, so you can get a feel for the old neighborhood. If you're curious about the places where artists really lived and worked, it's worth seeking out.
