Modigliani's Antonia
Musée de l'Orangerie · Paris, France
This painting carries all the hallmarks of Modigliani's style: sculptural, flowing lines, an elongated neck, and eyes left without pupils. The upper left bears the model's name, "Antonia," much like the portrait of Paul Guillaume seen earlier. But the presence of a name alone doesn't confirm that she was a close friend or lover — nothing specific is actually known about Modigliani's relationship with Antonia. The portrait, then, is best understood as less about her real life and more about the mood, form, and emotional essence Modigliani wanted to capture.
