Laurencin's Portrait of Madame Paul Guillaume
Musée de l'Orangerie · Paris, France
Marie Laurencin's Portrait of Madame Paul Guillaume depicts Juliette Lacaze, known by her nickname Domenica — the woman who donated the entire collection now housed on the lower level of the Musée de l'Orangerie.
Laurencin tended to paint her portraits in a fairly consistent style, but this one is unusual for how clearly it captures its sitter's actual features — the large eyes and the shape of the eyebrows closely match Domenica's real appearance. The painting also carries Laurencin's signature palette of soft pink, gray, and blue in balanced measure, along with the woman-and-dog motif she was known to favor, which appears here as well.
