André Derain, Landscape of Provence
Musée de l'Orangerie · Paris, France
Derain painted two versions of this same scene, and both now belong to the Musée de l'Orangerie. The brown tree on the right side of the canvas is a device borrowed from Cezanne: placing a tree or large rock in the foreground creates a natural sense of depth, making whatever lies behind it read as distant, without the artist having to calculate a formal vanishing point. Derain adopted this favorite technique of Cezanne's for his own landscape.
